A Fish Story

Let's start this fish story by being honest. Kind of an oxymoron, I know. I am not a fisherman, unless I'm in Alaska. This story will lay bare that fact. 4 AM was way too early to be up for this adventure, but being the avid fisherman that I am, I was raring to go. The tide switched at 7:30, so it was important to be on the water before then. We cruised down the Lynn Canal back toward Auke Bay. At Lena Cove we pulled in to fish for king salmon. Kings are released here as youngsters, but when they come back to spawn as adults, there is not a lake for them to get to. Thus it is a terminal release point. In the first hour-plus of fishing, four of us caught 5 kings.

We ended up with 7. The last 2 took about four hours to catch.

I was tired, cold, wet and hungry by then. Not a good combination. By the time we fished for halibut and pulled shrimp pots, I was hangry. I watched as the expert fishermen cleaned the fish and vacuum sealed the salmon steaks.

As I feel asleep, visions of jumping salmon were in my head. What a great day!
